Presentation of the book “Europa, cristianesimo, geopolitica. Il ruolo geopolitico dello «spazio» cristiano” by Eugenio Mazzarella (Mimesis Editions)

On Monday 25 May 2022, the presentation of the book “Europa, cristianesimo, geopolitica. Il ruolo geopolitico dello «spazio» cristiano” (Mimesis Editions) by Eugenio Mazzarella was held at Palazzo Borromeo.

After the greetings of Ambassador Francesco Di Nitto, the President of the Constitutional Court Giuliano Amato and the Rector of the LUMSA University Francesco Bonini intervened, in addition to the author. The debate was moderated by the journalist and writer Claudio Sardo.

In the light of the evolution of the globalization process, the advance of secularization and the increasingly frequent encounter of different cultures and religions, it seems necessary to rethink a global role of Europe that makes dialogue and cooperation among people the guiding principle of its modus operandi. In his book, inspired by Pope Francis’ innovative message, the author identified as a possible starting point the Christian roots of Europe and the values that distinguish it from the other parts of the world.

Therefore, the debate has shown the need to start from the past in order to build a sustainable future that is able to face the new global challenges. As pointed out by President Giuliano Amato in his speech, what made Europe a bulwark of rights are precisely its Christian roots: the central role of the person and the recognition of human dignity – the basis of European pluralism – were, indeed, already part of the canonist tradition, as well as the sense of common belonging to the same “human family”.

It was also highlighted how Christian values – integral ecology, cooperation among people, justice -, as well as the global agenda proposed by Pope Francis, can represent a valid alternative to the neoliberal paradigm. With a view to bringing the past and the future together, the participants agreed on the need to promote public policies aimed at enhancing the demographic situation of Europe.
