The river saves the sea

On April 19th 2018, to celebrate the Earth Day, Marevivo and Roma Capitale, in collaboration with the International Hydrological Committee IHP – UNESCO of the Ministry of the Environment and Protection of the Land and Sea, organised the meeting “Il Fiume salva il mare” (The River Saves the Sea) on the Tiber, in the floating headquarters of the organisation, on the theme of plastic pollution at sea.
The event was also sponsored by the Italian Embassy to the Holy See and others, representing various European and world countries, so that the message, which starts in Rome, is spread throughout the planet. Ambassador Pietro Sebastiani took part in the debate with a message on the commitment of international organisations to the issues, placing the theme of water in Agenda 2030 and the “Enciclica Laudato Si’ at the centre of his speech.

Rivers are the great arteries of the Planet: in the past they carried life, but over time, they have become waste conveyor belts. Marevivo has been dealing with this problem for some time and urges the institutions to intervene and prevent waste from reaching the sea so that only water can flow into the rivers for life: this is the message entrusted by the Tiber to the world.

The meeting aimed to involve not only national institutions (Municipalities, Regions, Ministries), but also the international community as a whole, because it is a challenge that must be faced at a global level.

The debate concluded with the Water Ceremony, a symbolic moment, aimed at ideally uniting all the rivers of the Earth through the Tiber.
