On Thursday 24 September, the conference entitled “Giorgio La Pira: diplomacy, politics and peace in the Mediterranean” was held in the cloister of Palazzo Borromeo.
The aim of the conference is to remember Giorgio La Pira, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Labor in ’48 and three times Mayor of Florence, and through him reflect on the theme of the Mediterranean – the cradle of civilizations and of the three monotheistic religions – and on the importance of cooperation between the peoples of its shores in this historical phase of economic, political and social turbulence.
After the institutional greetings from Ambassador Pietro Sebastiani, the conference, moderated by Luigi Di Santo (Scientific Director of the Giorgio La Pira Socio-Political Training School), saw the interventions of H.E.R. Cardinal Gualtiero Bassetti (President of the Italian Episcopal Conference), Gennaro Giuseppe Curcio (Secretary General of the Jacques Maritain International Institute), Maurizio Certini (Councilor of the Giorgio La Pira Foundation), Prof. Philippe Chenaux (Pontifical Lateran University).
