The International Day of Human Fraternity is an annual recurrence established by the General Assembly of the United Nations with Resolution 75/200 on December 21, 2020. The anniversary of February 4 was also chosen to remember and celebrate the Document on “Human fraternity for world peace and living together” signed by Pope Francis and the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Ahmad Al-Tayyib on February 4, 2019 in Abu Dhabi.
Already in the Preamble of the 1945 Charter of the United Nations, the decision to “save future generations from the scourge of war, which twice in the course of this generation has brought untold sorrow to mankind” was affirmed. In 1999, then, the General Assembly adopted, by resolution 53/243, the Declaration and Program of Action on a Culture of Peace, which served as a universal mandate for the international community to promote a culture of peace and non-violence. Finally, on October 20, 2010, the General Assembly in its resolution A/RES/65/5 emphasized that mutual understanding and interfaith dialogue are important dimensions of a culture of peace and established World Interfaith Harmony Week as a way to promote harmony among all people regardless of their faith.
